Galina Mihaylova – Principal dancer with Ballet Zurich

Team Zarely: When did you start learning ballet?
Galina Mihaylova: I started ballet when I was 10 years old. That’s when ballet schools can take you in with an audition.

Team Zarely: Did you decide to be a ballerina by yourself or was it your parents’ decision?
Galina Mihaylova: Noone from my family has anything to do with ballet or even dance. I recall watching Varna competition on TV and there was Black Swan variation. So I said to my mom “I want to be like her”:)

Be patient and passionate about the dance

Team Zarely: Your career path in ballet has been truly amazing! Now that you are a principal dancer what is the hardest part for you in being at such level?
Galina Mihaylova: I would say being a corps de ballet (group) dancer is much more difficult than being a principal. In a group you interact with many other dancers, you have to feel them, be an integral part of the whole and at the same time enjoy dancing. It is extremely challenging but I think if you can do all this and you are smart enough to be a principal.

Team Zarely: What do you recommend aspiring young dancers, when they ask for your advice?
Galina Mihaylova: Be patient and passionate about dance!

Team Zarely: What is your biggest dream now, Galina? It might be ballet related or not.
Galina Mihaylova: My biggest dream… hhhmmm… Well I have never met Barishnikov and this will be an amazing encounter should it ever happen! And I dream of the world without wars and disasters. Though I am not overly optimistic to actually believe this dream to come true.
